Tihar readies semi-open prison cells
Countdown for the semi-open jail facility has begun for the inmates of Tihar, Asia’s largest jail.
The Tihar jail authorities confirmed that the process to provide semi open jail to inmates is ready. A the list of inmates who can avail the facilities is being prepared.
“We have ordered superintendents of every jail to prepare a list of the inmates under their supervision and send it to the committee to decide eligibility of inmates for the semi-open jail,” said Sunil Gupta, spokesperson, Tihar Jail. The list is likely to be tabled to the committee in September.
Under this system inmates will leave the jail premises to work for a stipulated time period and come back to their cell before night. They will be allowed to work within a certain radius of the prison complex,” a Tihar prison official said.
The eligible inmates must have proven good conduct and also observed jail rules. The officials said that convicts must have also obeyed three paroles and furlong and nothing adverse must be against them during their temporary release.
The facility will be open to convicts who have been sentenced for five to 10 years and have only remaining two years to serve. For this, the barracks in jail number five will be converted into a semi-open jail and around 100 convicts will be identified to be placed here. This facility already exists in 32 jails across the country.
