Tight security cordon in city
The city has been turned into a fortress ahead of the Independence Day to pre-empt any terror strike. A three-tier security cover is in place with at least 80 companies of security forces (around 6,000 personnel), specialised units like NSG, bomb disposal squads, dog squads, anti sabotage squads and special teams of Delhi police and paramilitary forces pressed into service.
Armed security personnel from the Delhi police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the city, especially near the Red Fort where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will unfurl the tricolour and address the nation. Hundreds of CCTVs have been installed near Red Fort and NSG sharpshooters deployed on highrises near the 17th century Mughal monument.
Areas near Red Fort have been sanitised and no cameras, binoculars, handbags, briefcases, transistors, cigarette lighters, tiffin boxes, mobile phones, water bottles, lunch boxes, etc. will be permitted at the function.
Joint checking of vehicles is being carried out by police forces of Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad and Gurgaon at borders.
Security has been beefed up at airport, markets, railway stations, inter-state bus terminals and Metro stations.
