Teenage girl dies of electric shock
A 15-year-old girl was electrocuted to death after she stepped into a puddle of water inside her school in north-east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden area on Friday morning.
The police officials said Priya Mishra — a student of Class 9 at Eak Nath Rajakiya Kanya Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Dilshad Garden’s J&K block, had just stepped out of her class when the incident occurred. The police was informed about the incident at 12.30 pm.
“Investigation has revealed that the victim got electrocuted when she mistakenly stepped into a puddle of water within the school compound. A live wire from an adjacent electricity pole was submerged in the water which led to her electrocution,” said a senior police officer. The vice-principal of the school, Anita Rani, has been suspended by the authorities after the incident.
The incident comes less than a year after five girl students were killed and 33 others injured during a stampede at a government school in the nearby Khajuri Khas area. “Construction work being undertaken by DSIIDC is underway close to the spot. An electric wire that was being used in the construction work had fallen to the ground after Thursday’s heavy rains,” said the officer.
“We had to use electric sticks to get her body away from the wire that had entangled her legs. It took us more than 10 minutes to get her out,” said Shambhu Kumar, a safai karamchari at the school. A resident of Ghaziabad’s Shaheed Nagar area, Priya was rushed to the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.
Hours after the incident, the victim’s family members and neighbours stormed the school premises and attempted to rough up the vice-principal. “If this isn’t the result of the school’s negligence, then what is? If the administration was aware of the fallen wire, why didn’t they do anything to remedy the situation? The wire is still lying in the puddle of water but no one cares,” said Sunita Devi, Priya’s aunt.
