Surrendered of own will: Kanda
Before entering the Ashok Vihar police station here to surrender at 4 am on Saturday, former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda told mediapersons waiting there, “I came here of my own will to help the investigation.” Mr Kanda is an accused in the suicide case of former airhostess Geetika Sharma.
The Delhi high court, dismissing his anticipatory bail plea on Friday, had said he did not file the plea in person despite being a “free man” and that was “sufficient” ground for its rejection.
Kanda, who was last seen coming out of his Gurgaon residence on August 8, was served with a notice to join investigations on August 7.
However, Geetika’s brother Ankit alleged on Saturday that Mr Kanda’s surrender was a “pre-planned drama” and that the government was helping him.
Geetika committed suicide on August 5 and alleged in a suicide note that Mr Gopal Kanda and her associate Aruna Chaddha harassed her at length which was the reason for her committing suicide.
Hours before his surrender, Mr Kanda’s brother, Govind, came to the police station at midnight to inform the police that the former minister would surrender. However, the police arrested Govind on charges of harbouring Mr Kanda, who had been booked for abetting suicide and criminal intimidation.
On Thursday, a magisterial court had issued a non-bailable warrant against the former Haryana minister and had asked the police to execute it by August 24.
Meanwhile, Mr Kanda moved an application saying he apprehended “highhandedness” of the police during his custodial interrogation. He said the police may torture him to extract false confession or create a false case, after which the court allowed his counsel to meet him during the interrogation.
The court dismissed his plea for medical check-up every 12 hours and said instead the same would be done every 24 hours.
