Students protest against Batla verdict
Students from Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University gathered at Jantar Mantar on Saturday to protest the verdict on the involvement of Shahzad in the Batla House encounter case.
All India Students’ Association (AISA) Delhi president Sandipan Taluqdar said, “When the Ishrat Jahan case has been proved to be fake one, the Batla House encounter should also be questioned. AISA from the very beginning has been firmly demanding a judicial probe into it. We reassert the demand from here today. With elections around, it will be interesting to see the role of the UPA government.” Sandeep Singh, AISA national president, asserted the same point. He added, “Minority witch hunting and profiling will become a big issue in the future. We have seen how the current UPA government in collusion with right wing forces was trying to paint Azamgarh as a terrorist-making factory. In response to this minority witch hunt, people of Azamgarh had come out in protest and we will stand with them against such a practice in the name of fighting terrorism.”
The protesters also lit candle and marched at the Jantar Mantar road. While the lower court has given a judgment on the involvement of Shahzad in the Batla case, many questions were raised by residents of Batla house and students, a joint press statement said.
The court pronounced suspected Indian Mujahideen operative Shahzad guilty to for killing a police inspector and assaulting other cops in the 2008 Batla case.
