Shun taboos on epilepsy, says expert
A talk on Stigma And Society — What Do We Learn From Epilepsy? is going to be held at the India Habitat Centre on coming Tuesday and Dr Manjari Tripathi, associate professor, department of neurology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences will be the key speaker.
“People fear talking about epilepsy. The disease is harmless as compared to heart disease or cancer which they freely talk about and which are even more harmful. They avoid talking about it fearing that it would hinder the chances of getting a young person married, people would start discriminating and worst of all they think it is a result of some bad past karma or doing of some supernatural power,” Dr Tripathi said.
“As a result, the chances of the patient seeking medical help get reduced. They visit quacks or those people who do not know about the disease. They should either go to neurologist or an expert in medicine,” she added.
She emphasised that 80 per cent of the cases are curable and need regular intake of medicine.
She also stressed that none should hide the fact from the prospective suitors about the disease and instead of hiding should find a suitable match who is understanding.
