Sheila snubs top cop, vents anger
In an apparent snub to the Delhi police, chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday expressed anger against the deteriorating law and order situation in the city by stating: “It is a matter of shame that women do not feel secure in the capital of the country”.
Reacting to the gruesome murder of a DU college girl on Tuesday, Ms Dikshit said “it is a matter of shame for each one of us that the capital city of India is considered the most unsafe city. This is unacceptable to us.” The CM gave vent to her disappointment with the law and order in the city in the presence of Delhi police chief B.K. Gupta at an event to mark the International Women’s Day. Mr Gupta on his part, put the blame on the “indifferent attitude of Delhiites towards crime against the fair sex”.
Ms Dikshit rejected Mr Gupta’s contention on improved law and order situation citing statistics by saying that the women in the city were living in an atmosphere of insecurity.
Mr Gupta, who blamed people’s lack of sensitivity for crime against women, gave example of Kolkata. “In cities like Kolkata, people react very strongly when they see crime against women. But there is no such reaction here. Incidents will come down if people react strongly,” he reasoned.
The remark of Mr Gupta invited rebuttal from the CM who remarked: “You talk about Kolkata. Of course, women are safe in Kolkata. There are two reasons for it. You must remember that police in Kolkata as well as the civil society are sensitive”.
The CM told Mr Gupta that he was invited to the function so that he could be conveyed the concern over the feeling of insecurity among the women. “Leav-ing aside the statistics, I want to ask you do we feel safe in the city. If women in the capital do not feel secure and safe then is it not a matter of shame,” she questioned.
