Settle s. delhi shrine land row via mediation: hc
The Delhi high court on Monday asked the residents of B.K. Dutt Colony in south Delhi, who alleged that outsiders encroached government land and resorted to violence in the name of performing religious work, and the management of a Muslim shrine located there to settle the issue through mediation.
The court also asked the Delhi Waqf Board and other public authorities, including DDA and Land and Development Office (Land DO), to sit together and amicably resolve the issue on March 19.
A bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw referred the matter to mediation centre and fixed April 17 for further hearing.
The court was hearing a plea of B.K. Dutt colony residents to direct the police to maintain law and order in the area as they faced a tense situation following a clash in January between police and devotees after they had tried to open the gate of Shahi-e-Mardana dargah at Kanati Masjid allegedly built on public land inside the colony.
The residents of the colony were living in fear and the police had not been able to protect them, the PIL said.
“The police has not been able to protect the residents of the colony but has actively collaborated with the outsiders to grab the space within the colony owned by the government”, the petition said. It said “outsiders” have attempted to intimidate the residents by foisting false cases on them and were using the police to threaten and harass them.
