Sec. 144 in New Delhi made Anna shift venue
The civil society members led by social activist Anna Hazare would sit on a day-long fast in the vicinity of Raj Ghat after the Delhi police indicated the leaders of the India Against Corruption that following imposition of Section 144 (preventive detention of CrPC) )in the New Delhi area under which Jantar Mantar comes their plan would not be allowed.
Noted Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan later told media that the civil society members would gather near the Raj Ghat for the day-long fast. The civil society members said that though they had not sought permission for the Jantar Mantar venue for the day-long fast, they were told by the police of the Section 144 prevailing in the New Delhi area after which they decided to shift the venue as they did not want confrontation.
Civil society member Arvind Kejriwal told reporters that they would hold all religion prayers along with a public debate in the evening on the proposed Lok Pal Bill being drafted by the joint drafting committee, which include five members from the civic society and five ministers of the government.
The Delhi police has imposed orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in New Delhi and Central Delhi police districts till June 11. These curb the gathering of five or more people at any place. While Jantar Mantar falls in the New Delhi police district, Ramlila ground, from where yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his supporters were evicted post midnight Saturday, comes in the central Delhi police district.
