Satellite phones seized by police
The Delhi police’s special cell has confiscated three Thuraya satellite phones from a news broadcasting firm which was using the gadget without permission, triggering an alert in the national capital.
The special cell officials said the gadgets were confiscated following an input from the Intelligence Bureau that a satellite phone was operating in the capital and was used to contact some Delhi mobile numbers. “During investigations, it was revealed that the phones were owned by a broadcasting channel. When we contacted the authorities, they told us that the phone was used for news coverage,” DCP (special cell), Arun Kampani said.
“As per the provisions of law, use of satellite phones in India is illegal without prior permission from the department of telecommunication and it amounts to the violation of Section 4 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885. We have recovered three satellite phones from the agency as they were not able to produce official permission from the DoT to use them,” Mr Kampani said.
The officials said a non-cognizable report (NCR) was registered under Indian Telegraph Act at the special cell police station and the court has directed the cell to carry on investigations in the matter.
