Salem faces charges for extortion
Seeking to invoke extortion charges against extradited gangster Abu Salem for allegedly making threat calls to some businessmen in 1998, the Delhi police has moved the court of additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) Rakesh Pandit for framing of these additional charges.
The police has sought framing of charges under Section 387 (putting a person in fear of death in order to commit extortion) against Salem, which entails seven years imprisonment as maximum punishment.
The ACMM, however, after going through the application of the police and the defence, has fixed hearing for further arguments till March 23.
Salem, extradited from Portugal in 2005 to face trial in eight cases, was initially charged under Section 384 (extortion) and 120-B (conspiracy) of the IPC, which provides for a maximum three-year jail term.
