Even after trifurcating the BJP-led MCD, the results of municipal elections have come as a rude shock to the Congress. The BJP retained its supremecy with the victory in all three civic bodies — East, North and South. The BJP won 138 seats out of 272 and Congress won 78, while the small parties and Independ-ents grabbed 56 seats.
The biggest setback for the Congress was losing the East Delhi Municipal Corporation. Many prominent leaders, like Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, health minister A.K. Walia, Dikshit’s son and MP Sandeep Dikshit, are from east Delhi. The worst performance was in Laxmi Nagar, represented by A.K. Walia, where Congress lost all the four wards to BJP.
“Victory in east Delhi is not just a result of anger against the Congress government, it is also a landmark because most of the prominent Congress leaders comes from that area. The residents of east Delhi have voted against the city government because one of the biggest scam of this government took place in east Delhi by building the Games Village,” said Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta.
BJP chief Nitin Gadkari praised party workers and claimed that the results are hint of change. “The people of Delhi has voted against the corruption of this government, inflation in every area and it is a referendum for the government,” he said.
Countering the BJP, AICC spokesperson Rashid Alvi said, “The elections were fought on local and mohallah issues. It is wrong to say that people have spoken anything against the state or the Central government. Earlier also, the party had lost municipal elections, but later when Assembly and parliamentary polls took place results were in favour of our party.”
Meanwhile, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi lauded BJP workers for putting up a “wonderful” performance in the civic polls.
“Congratulations to fellow party workers and voters of Delhi for BJP’s wonderful performance in MCD elections,” Mr Modi wrote on twitter.
Punjab chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal also congratulated the BJP for the victory.
