PWD drafts reply on CVC report
Already in the dock following the Shunglu Committee report, the Delhi government’s public works department is now preparing its response to a fresh report of Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) which found deficiencies and use of sub-standard material in certain Commonwealth Games projects.
The PWD is likely to dispatch the response on Tuesday after the Delhi government was asked by the Union home ministry to reply on the charges of financial irregularities in Games-related projects.
The Chief Technical Examination wing of the CVC, in its latest report on CWG projects, found deficiencies in 26 works worth `3,316.58 crores out of which six projects worth `1,315.66 crores were implemented by the public works department of the Delhi government. Sources also pointed out that the CVC report states that the PWD failed to finish the Barapulla elevated road project in time.
Talking to the media, a senior PWD official who was involved in the CWG-related projects said: “The CTE wing of CVC conducts technical evaluation of all government projects. It is a regular exercise. They send their observations to us and we reply back.”
The official further confirmed that the PWD response is likely to reach the CVC and the home ministry on Tuesday.
Adding to PWD minister Raj Kumar Chouhan’s woes with both the CVC and Shunglu Committee finding irregularities in several key CWG projects undertaken by his department, the CBI on Saturday registered a case against some officials of PWD and a few firms in connection with alleged bunglings in the construction of the Barapullah elevated road project.
