Principal, 3 others taste food, fall ill
Another instance of poor quality midday meal served in schools has surfaced. This time a school principal fell ill after testing a sample of the food provided under midday meal scheme. The incident occurred at government primary school, Sector 21, Rohini on Monday.
North Delhi Municipal Corporation director of press and information, Yogendra Singh Mann said, “As per the directions, the midday meal, comprising halwa-chana, supplied by the NGO Maytri Research and Development Foundation to Primary Municipal School, Sector-21, Rohini, was tasted by school principal, the teacher in-charge of the midday meal and two members who usually distribute the food, before distributing it to the school children on Monday.”
As per practice, the midday meal is distributed 30 minutes after the food is tasted, but as three members complained of stomachache 10 minutes after consuming the food, the school principal decided not to distribute the midday meal. However, one of the four members of the tasting committee did not complain any complication, the NDMC said in a statement.
The three members, who had complained of stomach pain, were taken to Brahm Shakti Hospital, Budh Vihar, and returned within 30 minutes after visiting the doctor, as they felt better, said Mr Mann.
The samples of the food were immediately sent to Shri Ram Laboratory for testing and the report is awaited.
It is noteworthy that Maytri Research and Development Foundation has been supplying midday meal to 56 other municipal schools in Rohini and Sadar Paharganj Zones. “No such complaint has been received from these schools so far,” the corporation clarified.
