Partial auto stir in Delhi
More than half of Delhi’s 55,000 autorickshaws went off the roads on Tuesday in a protest against the government’s directive to pay Rs 600 for permanent driver badges.
Of the 25 autorickshaw unions, 14 union took part in the strike that began at 9 am in line with a nationwide industrial shutdown.
However, the yellow-green carriages plied in various part of the city. “Of the 25 unions, only 14 are taking active part,” Lakshmi Chand Kashyap, a union leader, said. He argued, “Over 10 years ago, we were issued temporary driver badges for Rs 400 and for attending a two-day class. We were told that the temporary badges will be replaced by permanent ones but that never happened.”
“The transport department has asked us to pay Rs 600 again and reappear in test. They say they are doing it because they do not have old records. If they do not have records, its their problem why should we bear the brunt of it,” another union leader said.
