Panel set up for water reform plan
Keeping with its proposed plan to involve private sector in the water sector, the Delhi government on Wednesday constituted a high-powered committee to draft a roadmap and bring reforms in the management and distribution of water in the city, besides restructuring the Delhi Jal Board.
The move comes a week after the meeting of chief minister Sheila Dikshit with the Planning Commission.
The deputy chairman of Planning Commission, Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia had told chief minister Sheila Dikshit to bring efficiency in the water sector considering Delhi’s increasing requirement of the precious natural resource.
Delhi chief secretary P.K. Tripathi will head the committee which would file its report within a month after which the Delhi Cabinet would go through the proposed guidelines and take a decision.
The Planning Commission had asked the city government to explore ways for equitable distribution of water.
A senior official said that the government is likely to hand over management and distribution of water to private entities besides responsibilities like billing and revenue collection.
