Non-cloneable ID cards project delayed
With the Commonwealth Games just 40 days away, the much touted project of issuing biometric “non-cloneable” identity cards to the forces before the event begins here in October has hit a roadblock, with a majority of Delhi police personnel showing “lack of interest” in furnishing their personal details required for the cards. Highly-placed
sources said that the issue was raised at a meeting attended by top Delhi police officers including city police chief Y.S. Dadwal at the police headquarters here. Sources revealed that the officers have been directed to initiate departmental action, if necessary, against the personnel who don’t furnish their details. However, no deadline has been fixed for the same.
The project for issuing “non-cloneable” identity cards is being implemented by a private company, which started the process last year. Sources revealed that in the New Delhi district, for example, out of more than 18,000 police personnel, only 300 had furnished their details till August 10, prompting the additional deputy commissioner of the area to issue two notices, which are in possession of this newspaper, against the police personnel who had defaulted. Similar situation prevails in south and west districts, where a meagre proportion of the police force has submitted its details.
These non-cloneable ID cards were billed as a major security measure that would prevent any infiltration in the forces. The forces deployed for Common-wealth Games will be carrying two identity cards, one issued by the department and the other by the Organising Committee.
