Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit backed the private discoms on the issue of power tariff on Wednesday.
Ms Dikshit, while speaking to reporters in a function, justified the power tariff hike citing the hike in power tariffs in the “whole world”.
She also dumped the former Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) chief’s remarks of roll back in power tariffs in year 2010.
“That decision was taken two years back and at this point of time it is not fit. The consumption of power has been increased in the national capital which resulted in the power tariff hike and if anyone is using electricity then they must pay the bills. Power production is also less than required for consumption,” Ms Dikshit said.
When asked about the wrong and hefty bills of the private power distributors, Ms Dikshit said that it is a matter between the company and the consumer.
Meanwhile, on the fourth consecutive day of their “bijli-paani satyagrah” IAC activist Gopal Rai, a key team member of Arvind Kejriwal, restored power connections of some houses in Mangolpuri area of Delhi. Mr Rai slammed Ms Dikshit on her remarks on the power tariff and asked her to take action against the big defaulters first.
“She is supporting private power distribution companies. If the CM wants to take action against the defaulters then why is she not taking action against the big defaulters. The private distribution companies are charging much more than required from the common consumer,” Mr Rai alleged.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people came in support of activist Gopal Rai and burnt their electricity bills in Mangolpuri area to oppose the hefty bills and power tariff.
