NDMC surplus budget to take Games legacy ahead
Coming up with a revenue surplus budget for the year 2011-12, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is now planning to upgrade its infrastructure, besides maintaining and taking the legacy of the Commonwealth Games forward.
In his annual budget presentation, NDMC chairman, Parimal Rai, said that the civic agency plans to come up with at least 78 model playfields in the neighbourhoods of NDMC area, which could be used by children for their holistic development.
NDMC spokesperson Anand Tiwari said the concept was to create space for children and raise awareness about sports. “Four grounds — at Mandir Marg, Raja Bazar, Havloc Square and Talkatora Garden — were developed as pilot project. At least 66 of these projects will have an area of up to half acre. All the grounds will have kids’ play equipment,” said Mr Tiwari. The project is being supported by the sports ministry.
A smart card-based extension of health and educational services to the students of NDMC schools is also planned. The project’s second phase will cover 43 schools.
The budget also talked about healthy response to Talkatora Stadium, where the boxing competition was held during Commonwealth Games. The stadium was being used as a sports-cum-socio-cultural centre and a boxing training centre is planned at the venue. The NDMC also plans to build multi-level car parkings.
The agency also plans to augment its revenue by giving 50 per cent rebate to those paying their property tax up to `5 lakhs within the stipulated time.
