Nandita Narain elected Duta president
After winning the Delhi University Teacher’ Association (Duta) president election on Friday, the Left-affiliated Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF) demanded rollback of the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) and immediate recruitment of ad-hoc teachers as permanent ones.
Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF) presidential candidate Nandita Narain, a mathematics teacher at St. Stephen’s, won the election defeating her rival from Congress-backed Academics for Action and Development (AAD)-INTEC by 785 votes.
Out of total 6,474 polled votes, Ms Narain received 2,705 while (AAD)-INTEC candidate Ashwini Shankar got 1,920 votes. Pramod C, Sharma and Shiba C, Panda got 868 and 561 votes, respectively.
“Teachers have voted against the negative policies of Delhi University and the government. We will fight for the rollback of the FYUP and also demand immediate recruitment of ad-hoc teachers. They are living in fear of losing their job. It is inhuman,” said Ms Narain. She has been a strong critic of the semester system and the FYUP.
However, a senior teacher said that the demand made by the DTF to rollback FYUP is “irresponsible”.
