Najeeb Jung takes oath as 19th L-G

Former IAS officer Najeeb Jung took over as the new lieutenant-governor of the national capital on Tuesday. Former vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Mr Jung was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Acting Chief Justice of Delhi high court B.D. Ahmed at a function at Raj Niwas in the presence of chief minister Sheila Dikshit, ministers and top brass of Delhi government and police.

However, Mr Jung’s predecessor Tejendra Khanna skipped the ceremony. Mr Jung will be the administrative head of the Delhi government and in-charge of the Delhi police and the Delhi Development Authority.
Mr Jung, 62, a 1973-batch IAS officer, is the 19th L-G of the city. Earlier, Mr Jung had said that he would concentrate on improving law and order situation and ensuring better security for women in Delhi.
Former L-G Mr Khanna had come under criticism following the December 16 gangrape of a 23-year-old girl. Mr Khanna also did not have very cordial relations with chief minister and they were at loggerheads on a range of issues.
The new L-G refused to speak to the media on Tuesday, saying he will talk after a week. “I will not speak today. I will talk to you after one week,” he said after the swearing-in ceremony.
A postgraduate from Delhi University, Mr Jung did M.A. in social policy and planning from London School of Economics.
