Mob attacks rape-accused driver
An irate mob vandalised a police station and blocked traffic in central Delhi on Saturday in protest against the alleged sexual abuse of a minor girl and her two brothers by their school driver.
The accused driver, Lalit Ratawal, was being taken to the RML Hospital for medical examination on Saturday morning when locals and relatives of the victims thrashed him. Angry locals also damaged a Maruti van belonging to the accused, forcing the police to use force to quell the protesters. The police had to put barricades to stop the locals from getting violent.
Meera Devi, mother of the accused said that her son had passed out of Hans Raj College but had failed to secure a job. “So he bought a Maruti van in 2000 and was ferrying school kids since then. Lalit has been driving the van since last ten years but there has not been any complaint from any student. He has been framed and I will fight for justice,” she said.
Later in the day, the court sent Lalit to two-day police remand and asked the police to present him on September 20.
“We will thrash him again if we get the opportunity. He has done something that is unacceptable,” said Subhash Nagar, a neighbour of the victims. The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights also swung into action on Saturday and ordered an inquiry into the matter.
