MLAs will get 200% raise
It is not only the Members of Parliament who are to get a major hike in salaries. The Delhi MLAs are also likely to get a raise in remuneration. The Delhi Cabinet has given its consent for 200 per cent hike in the salaries of the MLAs, Assembly Speaker, chief minister, ministers and Leader of the Opposition keeping in view the growing expenses and increasing inflation.
Chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday stated that the hike has been proposed by the government and after discussing it with the Opposition, the proposal will be sent to the Central government for approval. However, Ms Dikshit refused to give details of the hike. Meanwhile, reliable sources in the city government confirmed that the hike will be on the lines of the hike for MPS, which is upto 200 per cent.
The move comes days after the Centre hiked the MP’s salary to Rs 50,000 per month from Rs 16,000. The Union Cabinet on Monday agreed to further raise the monthly allowances by Rs 10,000. The Delhi government officials familiar with the development indicated that a hike in the range of 150 to 200 per cent has been recommended.
The officials added that as per the recommendation, an MLA who currently gets nearly Rs 32,000 monthly, including all incentives, will get around Rs 70,000. The ministers, who get around Rs 36,000 monthly, are likely to get around Rs 80,000 if the proposal sails through.
Apart from the monthly emolument of Rs 32,000, the MLAs also get a monthly amount of Rs 10,000 for employing computer operators. “It is an appropriate move. We need a hike as costs have gone up in the last few years,” said a Delhi Cabinet member under a condition of anonymity.
A proposal to this effect was approved by the Delhi Cabinet on Wednesday. The Cabinet approval was taken by circulation of proposal.
The Cabinet decision was sent to the lieutenant-governor’s office for further approval. If the proposal is accepted, the Delhi legislator’s salary and allowances would be around Rs 80,000-90,000 per month while the chief minister’s and minister’s salary is expected to rise from Rs 46,000 to Rs 1,25,000. The salary of an MLA is currently Rs 42,000, including computer operator allowances while a minister gets salary of Rs 46,000 per month.
According to the Cabinet note, there is a proposal to raise the basic salary of MLAs from Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000 per month and from Rs 500 to 1,000 (subject to maximum up to 40 days) in daily allowances. The basic salary of chief minister has been proposed to increase from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per month.
For ministers, it proposes Rs 12,000 as basic salary and Rs 1,000 as daily allowance.
The constituency allowance for ministers and MLA has also been proposed to increase from Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000. For ministers, it proposes rent-free furnished residence or Rs 25,000 per month as compensatory allowance, if residential facility is not availed by the minister or is not provided by the government. Earlier, the compensatory allowance was fixed at Rs 10,000 per month.
Earlier in April, a similar proposal was moved in the Delhi Cabinet but it was referred back for clarifications.
