MLA roughed up in bid to settle wrangle
The Congress legislator from Sultanpuri constituency, Jai Kishen, was allegedly assaulted after he intervened in a scuffle between two groups in his area on Wednesday evening.
The police said the incident took place at around 9.30 pm when the legislator was on his way home in a car and spotted two groups involved in a scuffle that blocked the road.
Police sources said the legislator got down from his vehicle and asked them to clear the road. When he sensed that there were two groups clashing over some issue, he tried to pacify the agitated crowd and asked them to approach the authorities to settle the dispute.
“As he was talking to the people, one of the trouble-makers, identified as Sonu, who is a resident of Sultanpuri, manhandled the legislator and allegedly hurled abuses at him. He was soon joined by other people in the crowd. Mr Kishen, however, grabbed him by his collar and prevented him from escaping when he tried to make his way out of the crowd,” a police source said.
Sonu tried to run away and dragged the legislator along with himself and both fell into a nearby drain.
In the meantime, a call was made to the police control room and a team of police personnel arrived at the spot.
“Four people, including Sonu, were arrested from the spot. They have been charged under various sections of the IPC,” a senior police official said.
