MLA claims threat to life, seeks security
A Congress MLA in the Delhi Assembly on Friday claimed that he is getting threat calls from unknown persons and demanded police protection, citing increased “threat perception”. Jaswant Rana, a Congress MLA from Narela Assembly constituency of north Delhi, alleged that he has complained the local police station regarding the threat calls but no action was taken.
Following Mr Rana’s demand, a number of Congress MLAs also joined him in seeking police protection in the wake of “increased threat perception” and to carry out developmental works “fearlessly”. The chief minister and the Speaker said that they will discuss the issue with the city police commissioner. Mr Rana said that even after being an MLA he felt vulnerable and demanded immediate intervention of the police.
“I was not well and admitted in a nursing home on May 24 when someone called at my home and threatened my family members. I filed a written complaint on May 26. I also complained the chief minister about this and received a positive response,” Mr Rana said.
The issue was discussed in the CLP meeting and in the House and as a result Speaker of the House Yoganand Shastri said he will talk to the commissioner regarding security of the MLAs. The MLAs demanded that the either the police commissioner takes the responsibility of their security or provide them personal security officers.
