Mercury at new 10-yr June 8 low
Whether high or low, the mercury this year seems to be in a mood to break records either way. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature for June 8 was recorded at 26.9 degrees Celsius, with the previous low being 25.7 degrees Celsius in 2000. The minimum temperature was recorded at 22.1 degrees Celsius. Though it did not rain heavily, slight drizzle through the morning accompanied with moist, cold winds left the city pleasantly surprised, particularly at this time of the year.
According to the weatherman, the maximum temperature was as much as 14 degrees “below normal”, while the minimum temperature was six degrees below normal. The capital recorded a total rainfall of 1.4 mm in the last 36 hours. The temperatures in neighbouring Gurgaon and Ghaziabad also remained in the 20s.
The moist winds increased the humidity levels to a maximum of 93 per cent and a minimum of 60 per cent. A weather department official attributed the unusually low temperatures to the cyclonic winds blowing in Rajasthan, where it has rained heavily in several areas. The effect is likely to begin wearing off from Wednesday. The spell of rainfall activity in the entire northern region, which has seen isolated rain or thunder showers accompanied with squall, will weaken over the next few days and the day temperature is likely to rise by two to three degrees over the region.
For Delhi, the weatherman has forecast a clear sky on Wednesday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 36 degrees and 25 degrees Celsius.
