MCD: No funds for road projects
The MCD on Monday said that it did not have enough cash to fund the various road improvement projects that were supposed to be undertaken by the civic agency. The MCD blamed the government for not releasing the funds for the crucial projects.
Chairman of the works committee, Jagdish Mamgain, said that due to the Delhi government’s attitude, work on several community halls and school buildings, besides road improvement projects, have got stuck. Mr Mamgain said that a number of councillors raised the issue at a meeting of the works committee saying that they were facing acute shortage of funds as a result of which improvement works were not being carried out. “The government was to provide us `1,000 crores under various heads for construction of school and community halls and improving roads, but we have got only `500 crores so far,” he said.
Mr Mamgain said that the Delhi government was unnecessarily holding on to the instalments of the grants that were supposed to have been released by now. “They will finally give us the money at the fag end of the financial year, when there is no time left for taking up any work,” said Mr Mamgain, adding that with some of the Congress councillors also raising the issue at the meeting, he asked them to impress upon the government to do the needful so that the civic agency could carry out its works.
