MCD Civic Centre to be maintained by private firm
The pride of the city’s civic body, Civic Centre, which will be MCD’s new headquarters, will be maintained by a private agency, which looks after the likes of the Prime Minister’s residence and Vigyan Bhavan. However, the Opposition has criticised the move. The MCD has also decided to take help of the crime branch of the Delhi police for curbing the menace of parking mafia.
A proposal for awarding the contract to a private company was passed in the meeting of the powerful MCD’s standing committee here on Tuesday.
A private agency will be paid `25.35 crores for a period of three years to ensure maintenance of the 28-storey building, which cost `650 crores.
The move, however, was opposed by the leader of the Opposition in the MCD, J.K. Sharma, who called it “disgraceful”.
The work has been awarded to M/S BVG India, which provides similar services to installations like Prime Minister’s house, Vigyan Bhavan and Parliament House, for executing the task of facility management for three years.
Meanwhile, the MCD has decided to take the help of the Delhi police for tackling the menace of parking mafia, which are operating illegal parking sites.
Chairman of the MCD’s standing committee, Yogender Chandolia, on Tuesday said that he has already met the Delhi police commissioner in this regard and has sought the help of the crime branch of the Delhi police to get illegal parking lots removed and bringing the operators to book.
Mr Chandolia said it seemed that a parking mafia was operating in the city and fleecing people by over-charging them.
They also allow parking a much higher number of vehicles than a given space can accommodate. He said that the menace could be checked with the help of the crime branch.
