Many rape cases still unsolved
Three years after a MBA student was allegedly kidnapped and gangraped in a moving vehicle by 11 youths, the girl had shifted to London and the trial is running in a local court here. There are many other similar cases like hers, in which due to lengthy judicial procedure, justice is delayed and in many cases even denied.
The girl was gangraped by eleven youths on January 5, 2009 when she was returning from the Great India Place Mall in Noida with his friend and batchmate. In October this year, she had come from London and identified ten of the accused persons in a city court.
In another case, where a Swiss diplomat was allegedly gangraped after being abducted inside her own car by two men on October 14, 2003, had to accept the fact that the culprits are still free as the Delhi police had filed its closure report in 2008 by saying it has not been able to trace anyone involved in this crime.
During that time, she was a documentary filmmaker. She left India after the incident. A middle-aged woman, promised of marriage by a person had filed a rape charges against him in 2005, and the case is still running as an evidence in a trial court. The complaint came following a three-year relationship they had during which the man had allegedly promised to marry her and also tried to commit suicide when she refused to undergo an abortion.
As per the official statistics, a total number of 568 cases of rape have been reported in Delhi alone in the year 2011, out of which only 2% have been committed by strangers.
Following the Vasant Vihar gangrape case, the Delhi high court said it has accepted the request of the chief minister to constitute fast-track courts for rape cases.
