Man killed, 15 hurt in building collapse
A 55-year-old contractor was killed while 15 others suffered severe injuries when an under construction four-storey building collapsed in Jafrabad area in southeast Delhi early on Saturday.
A senior police official said the incident took place in Vijay Mohalla in the area.
The police said one Merajuddin, a resident of Chandni Chowk area, was constructing a house in the area illegally.
“The house got bent from the front side and developed cracks following which the local residents lodged a complaint with the EDMC office. The EDMC officials came to inspect the building and declared it unsafe. The municipal officials decided to demolish the building but the owner Merajuddin said that he will raze it on his own, the official said.
Merajuddin asked the labourers to demolish the building. The labourers were razing the third floor of the house when it came crashing down and all of them were trapped under the debris,” said the police official.
The fire brigade was called immediately.
The firemen rescued sixteen people trapped in the debris. They were rushed to a nearby government hospital where one Furkan was declared brought dead while the condition of three others was stated to be critical.
Furkan was the contractor overseeing the construction of the building.
“Everybody has been evacuated and all the injured have been discharged from the hospital,” said a senior police official.
The police has lodged an FIR in this respect.
