Man gave fake bail surety in 3,000 cases, held
The south district police has arrested a proclaimed offender who was involved in bailing out thousands of criminals by giving false surety on their behalf in courts.
The police claimed that the accused, identified as Pramod Kumar Gupta, 48, a resident of Khajuri Khas, has got more than 3,000 criminals released from custody who never came back to face trial. Kumar has been convicted in four cases and was declared a proclaimed offender in two cases.
The police said a secret information was received on Friday that the accused will be coming to Malviya Nagar and a team was set up to nab him.
“On the instance of the secret informer, Kumar was apprehended. During interrogation, Kumar said he came in contact with one Raj Kumar who taught him to give false surety for criminals for money. He has given false surety for more than 3,000 criminals in Tis Hazari, Patiala House and Rohini courts.
The police said his clients were arranged by the munshis of advocates and the vendors roaming around courts and even through some lawyers.
“One Rakesh and Chhotu sitting in Tis Hazari prepared ration card and other residence proofs for him while one Raju always claimed before the courts that Kumar was a tenant in his house. In this way, the surety was verified and most of the times the court gave direct bail without verification,” said deputy commissioner of police (south) Chhaya Sharma.
The accused was earlier working in a stationery manufacturing factory and then started selling ice creams in trains.
