Kin of man found dead accuse cop

The family of a 31-year-old man has alleged that he succumbed to injuries after being beaten up by a Delhi police constable in custody last week. Senior police officials, however, denied the allegations.

The deceased has been identified as Amit Kumar, a resident of Nand Nagri. He was handed over to policemen of the Dabri police station after being caught by locals for theft at Janki Puri C-7 on September 15.
“Amit was found injured and was reported to have been beaten up by public. He was sent to the DDU Hospital with a constable,” a senior police official said.
After a preliminary examination, Amit was referred to an orthopaedic doctor for further examination and treatment. After the treatment, he was discharged the same day with the advice to attend ortho OPD on September 17.
“As no cognisable offence was made out, he was released,” the official added.
On the same day, a body was found lying on near Janak Cinema at Dabri More. It was however not identified, so the investigating officer completed all due formalities.
On September 17, Amit’s family approached the Dabri police station and reported that he was missing. The statement of Amit’s brother-in-law Sunil Kumar was recorded and investigation was taken up.
“During the efforts to trace Amit, it was found that the body found at Dabri More was connected. Accordingly, his family members were informed immediately,” the official added.
Amit’s brother Ajit Kumar and brother-in-law Satish Kumar allege foul play and suspect that constable Ram Niwas is responsible for his death. Hence, the additional chief metropolitan magistrate of Dwarka has been requested for conducting an enquiry under Section 176 of the CrPC.
“Further action will be taken as per the judicial enquiry report,” a senior police official said.
