JNU campus to have more women guards
Jawaharlal Nehru University has decided to increase the number of women security guards on campus following the violent attack on a girl student by her classmate.
The university had constituted a10-member committee which has submitted its report recommending an increase in women security staff on campus and to establish a dedicated counselling line manned by trained counsellors and crisis intervention.
On July 31, an undergraduate student had entered the classroom armed with an axe, knife and pistol and attacked a girl student. The boy later committed suicide.
The university has also decided to set up an independent counselling centre for students. JNU vice-chancellor Prof. S.K. Sopory said that the committee has recommended further strengthening of student-faculty relations.
“Emphasis has been laid on sensitising students on issues of gender relationships. But the mindset of students towards these issues needs to change,” he said.
A sub-committee has been set up for framing guidelines for harmonious relations between students and supervisors.
