Intach launches textile conservation unit
After monuments and other heritage sites, the Intach, a non-profit organisation dedicated to conservation of art and heritage, has now set its eyes on conserving textile heritage.
Maj. Gen. L.K. Gupta (Retd.), chairman of Intach, on Thursday opened its first specialised textile conservation unit (STCU) here. During the inauguration, Maj. Gen. Gupta said that the unit was formed with the objective to promote awareness programmes around textile heritage. This will be done through conservation and preservation projects, workshops, seminars, publications and exhibitions.
The chairman further said that this unit will play a key role in popularising textile appreciation and their preservation.
This, in turn, will further help in research, documentation, conservation and development of our lost traditions, he added.
The STCU is a specialised conservation studio that works for government and semi-government organisations, private owners, museums and art galleries. It is concerned with the conservation and preservation of India’s rich textile heritage.
The move is a result of collaboration between the Indian Council for Conservation Institutes, which constitutes the Material Heritage Division of Intach, and Micro Inks Limited. The STCU will be based in Delhi.
