India Art Fair kicks off, with Christie’s as partner

Art connoisseurs, critics, artists and collectors have marked their calendars for the next two days, as the fifth edition of the India Art Fair kicked off recently in the capital. India Art Fair (IAF) 2013 brings together a dynamic set of galleries and artists, showcasing a range of modern and contemporary art practices by established and emerging artists in painting, sculpture, new media, installation and performing art.
The fair is offering international galleries a platform to present their works and explore the Indian art market, to meet new collectors and build relationships with key stakeholders. This time the art fair has shifted from Pragati Maidan to the NSIC Exhibition Grounds in Okhla.
India Art Fair founding director Neha Kirpal says, “The focus of the art fair is on developing new audiences, and initiating new energy in the Indian art market. It provides those with limited knowledge about art, an opportunity to see a diverse spectrum of art and for existing collectors, it offers a brand new line up of exciting works.”
IAF includes about 100 exhibitors from 24 countries in the general exhibition area and solo projects. The fair also has a video lounge, art projects and a speakers forum with over 40 eminent speakers. The highlights of the fair include works of international artists Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Damien Hirst, Marc Quinn and works of Indian stalwarts like F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza, M.F. Husain, Velu Viswanadhan, Anjolie Ela Menon, Rashid Rana, Bharti Kher and Subodh Gupta.
International galleries from new regions like Argentina, Bangladesh, Israel, Korea, Latvia, Turkey, Pakistan and Russia are also a part of the fifth edition.
The fair also features leading Indian galleries from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi and Agra.
Rasika Kajaria, director of Exhibit 320, a city-based gallery says that the IAF is a great platform to invite the entire Indian art fraternity (collectors, curators, dealers, gallerists and artists) under one roof.
“This year we are presenting two large public installations by Sachin G. Sebastian. The work is from the series Metropolis and the City Planners. Sachin is a spectacular artist working as a paper engineer with archival paper installations. His work talks of the city and the organised chaos within.”
The international art auction house, Christie’s has partnered with the India Art Fair 2013.
Talking about the association, Amin Jaffer, international director, Asian art, Christie’s said, “We are delighted to support the India Art Fair as we recognise its importance as a convening moment for all those who are passionate about the future of the Indian art market and are interested in the national artistic development.”
The India Art Fair is on till February 3.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
