Greenhouse gas device at venues soon
Carbon footprint calculators are likely to be installed at the Games Village and other venues in a couple of days. These calculators, also referred to as green calculators, were supposed to have been installed in time for the Games but got delayed as certain clearances did not come through.
The organising committee officials said that permission was needed for installation of the calculators from the environment ministry. The OC may get the clearance in the next couple of days. The idea behind installation of these calculators is to give people a chance to find out the carbon footprints generated by them on their way to the venue from their homes and so that they could make contribution in projects promoting green energy. The mega-event may produce 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh tonnes of greenhouse gases from October 3-14.
The organisers have been claiming that CWG 2010 are the first Green Games ever. Many venues like Thyagaraj Stadium have been designed as per green norms.
