Govt puts off circle rates hike

After protests from several quarters, the Delhi Cabinet on Monday deferred a decision to finalise the circle rates for properties in certain colonies. It has now decided to consult the residents before arriving at a final decision, confirmed the city government officials.
During a meeting headed by the chief minister Sheila Dikshit, it was pointed out that the residents’ welfare associations of many colonies objected to the circle rates announced. Some colonies, particularly in East Delhi, had objected to their rates being lower than those announced for adjoining ones.
The city government officials also said that after taking a considerate view of objections, the Delhi Cabinet decided to call a meeting with the residents of these colonies to resolve their grievances.
It was in June this year that the circle rates, that prescribe the minimum rate for valuation of properties, were announced for various colonies.

At least 14 persons, including ten cops, were injured when protests over police inaction in a road accident case turned violent in Aman Vihar area of outer Delhi on Monday.
The mob set a police vehicle on fire and damaged a DTC bus, said police officials.
The family of Aman, who was injured on August 14 and succumbed Sunday night, staged a protest alleging that the car, which hit Aman, was driven by a juvenile whose father is associated with a political party.
The protesters surrounded the vehicle of the SHO and demanded action against the accused. The protest turned violent when a cop hit a protester and resulted in pitched battle between police and protesters.
The police lobbed teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob pelting stones at them. “Ten policemen were injured in the stone pelting while four locals suffered injuries in the lathicharge,” a senior police official said.
