Govt to continue subsidy on PDS sugar

The city government on Monday decided to continue the distribution of sugar at subsidised rates under the public distribution system (PDS). The city government’s decision came following the Centre’s decision to de-control sugar. The decision was taken in Cabinet meeting presided over by chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday.

“Delhi government has decided to continue to supply sugar at subsidised rate of `13.50 per kg to 3.6 lakh BPL and AAY ration card holders in Delhi. The Cabinet has approved a mechanism to continue the existing facility even after Union government decided to abolish the levy sugar resulting in discontinuation of allocation of sugar to the states for meeting the requirements of PDS,” Ms Dikshit told reporters here.
She said that the government would bear the difference between the procurement cost of sugar and total of the subsidy receivable from the Centre and price of supplied sugar to the ration card holders.
“The city government has been providing six kg sugar per ration card which will continue. It was decided that the city government would procure 2,200 MT sugar per month through Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation (DSCSC) Limited from the open market through competitive bidding,” Ms Dikshit said.
Meanwhile the Delhi Cabinet also gave its nod for construction of a 100-bed hospital in Sarita Vihar, south Delhi.
“The hospital would be developed as per Green Building Concept. It will provide round-the-clock emergency services, maternity services, surgical facilities and other speciality services for secondary healthcare,” she added.
The Cabinet has also given its nod to a proposal for engagement of HLL Lifecare Limited, a government of India enterprise, for procurement of medical equipment for hospitals and medical institutions of the city government.
