Govt: 14 lakh saplings to be planted
The Delhi government plans to plant more than 14 lakh saplings this monsoon. The saplings are ready and will be distributed in public. The government has also started a tree census with the help of Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs).
“The saplings will be distributed free of cost to residents. Our aim is to spread awareness about the importance of trees and their conservation,” said an officer.
The government claims more than 10 lakh saplings were planted last monsoon.
“We have sought the records of old plantations,” he added.
“We sought help of RWAs for the census and provided paint, brushes, tapes and other goods. The census is on,” the officer added. According to government’s estimate, at least 10,000 people are needed to complete the census. Due to lack of manpower, the environment department had sought help of RWAs. The government will validate the data and award the “greenest” colonies.
The government is conducting tree census 18 years after the enforcement of the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act which came into force in 1994.
