Gambhir kin held for assault
The Delhi police claims to have arrested a cousin and uncle of a national cricketer for their alleged involvement in a road rage case in Karol Bagh area.
The accused, identified as Raghav Gambhir, 25, is the first cousin of cricketer Gautam Gambhir, the police said. The other accused has been identified as Mahendra Manchanda, 60, who is Gautam’s uncle.
The incident was reported in Karol Bagh on May 23, when a 46-year-old BPO cab driver, identified as Jaspal Singh, was thrashed by the duo after their cars had brushed past each other. The accused fled after the incident. They were arrested from Dhaula Kuan on Monday after a tip off.
The police said the accused persons have confessed to the crime and accepted to have acted in a fit of rage.
“Even as the driver pleaded to pay up for the damages, the accused thrashed him. Both the accused allegedly continued to hit him even as the cops arrived at the scene of crime. They had reportedly bullied the cops flaunting their connections and claimed to be the cricketer’s relatives. They have been sent to judicial custody till June 18,” said a senior police officer. The victim was rushed to a private hospital by the two police officials after the accused fled the spot.
A few days ago their car, a Hyundai Accent, involved in the incident had been recovered from their house in Rajendra Nagar.
