Fresh dates for semesters out
The Delhi University authorities have announced fresh dates for the semester examinations. The Delhi University Teachers’ Association, which has been opposing the semester system, refused to comment.
According to the revised academic calendar issued by the registrar, the practical examinations will begin on December 14 and semester exams will commence on January 4. Preparation leave will begin from December 25 and the colleges will reopen on January 3. The semester exams will end on January 13 and classes will begin the next day.
The university has said that the colleges and departments may organise teaching on Saturdays and Sundays to compensate for the loss of teaching due to strike etc. Those colleges which need time to complete their course may conduct practical exams after the written exams.
Duta president Aditya Narayan Misra when contacted said that he does not want to comment on the matter as the court is yet to decide on the issue.
The university invited the ire of the teaching community when former vice-chancellor Deepak Pental incorporated semester system for examination for science stream. The other streams had to follow later. Prof. Pental said that this a step towards bringing in international standards in the university. The teaching community termed the move arbitrary as the teacher bodies were not taken due consent over the matter. A section of teachers announced that they will not teach as per semester mode. They started holding strike regularly. This practice came to an end only when the Delhi high court intervened and instructed the teachers to go to the classes.
The students have suffered academic loss in the wake of strike held by the teachers. They are still confused over examinations.
