Free Tibet call marks protest
A large number of Tibetans on Wednesday staged a protest at Jantar Mantar demanding freedom of Tibet from China. The police had tightened the vigil to keep the protesters off from places like Chinese Embassy and Taj Mahal Hotel where Chinese premier Wen Jiabao is staying. Mr Jiabao arrived in the capital on a three-day visit to India on Wednesday morning.
Waving the yellow-blue-red Tibetan flags, the protesters shouted slogans demanding that Tibet be freed. They began the protest march from near Rajghat and gathered at Jantar Mantar. They also marched up to the nearby Parliament Street police station and then returned.
The protesters said they wanted to see a free Tibet and did not want to remain away from their homeland. One protestes said that though he had never been to Tibet but he felt sad every time he heard about human rights violations there.
The protesters plan another sit-in at Jantar Mantar on the day Mr Jiabao leaves. They have also promised to stage protests at various other “sensitive places”.
