Food scheme launch historic event: Sheila
With the launch of food security scheme in the capital, the city government is hopeful for a fourth consecutive win in the upcoming Assembly elections. Chief minister Sheila Dikshit described the launch of food security scheme in Delhi as a historic event.
“From September 1, 32 lakh people in Delhi would be getting rice at `3 per kg, wheat at `2 per kg through the seniormost head of the family. The city government would achieve the target to cover 73 lakh people in the next few months. The distribution of foodgrains would be effected through Aadhar-based National Food Security cards. Delhi has already enrolled 98 per cent of its population under Aadhar which is a unique identification for entire life for the residents,” Ms Dikshit said at the launch.
Delhi would cover 73.5 lakh people, which is around 44 per cent of the total population, under the scheme. More than 32 lakh people belonging to most vulnerable households have been brought under the scheme with the launch. “Till the completion of identification process, all economically weaker families getting subsidy under various schemes will be able to buy foodgrains under the scheme,” she added.
