Executive shot dead by burglars
A 35-year-old executive was shot dead by assailants when he resisted a robbery attempt at his residence in west Delhi on Thursday evening.
The incident is the latest in a series of heinous crimes that have taken place in the city, where a sudden spurt in crime rate is being seen after the Commonwealth Games. Over the last week, more than a dozen cases of heinous crimes have been reported from the city.
The police said the deceased, Sanjay Sharma, an executive with a private firm in Gurgaon, had returned to his A-72, Mohan Garden, Uttam Nagar home with his wife Suman and their six-year-old son Nanu after Diwali shopping, when he saw the main gate open and some men inside. “He asked his wife and son to stay outside while he walked in,” a police official said. “Sanjay found the assailants carrying out robbery. The assailants took him hostage and when he raised an alarm, they threatened to kill him. Fearing that they may be nabbed, one of the assailants took out a revolver and shot twice at him. One bullet hit him in the chest and he fell on the ground. The robbers took away cash and jewellery believed to be worth lakhs of rupees,” the official said.
When Sanjay’s wife heard gunshots she started screaming for help. The locals gathered and Sanjay was rushed to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital where he later succumbed. The police was informed at 10 pm.
“We have registered a case of murder and robbery at the Uttam Nagar police station. We are suspecting the involvement of local criminals in the incident. Forensic evidence has been collected and some people have been detained for questioning,” a senior police official said.
