Dry fruit trader is shot dead by cop
A Delhi Police head constable was arrested for shooting a businessman dead and then injuring a youth helping the police to chase him, the police said on Sunday.
The incident took place in Lahori Gate at around 9 pm on Saturday and the deceased has been identified as Amarjeet Chaddha, who was into the business of selling dry fruits, a senior police official said.
Sunny, who helped the police chase the attacker, was shot in his neck and is battling for life in a city hospital, while the accused, head constable Ajay Tomar, who jumped from a bridge to flee, was also injured and caught.
According to the police official, head constable Surender Tyagi was at Lahori Gate when he saw Chaddha and his employee Mohit in a car. Chaddha had suffered a bullet wound.
Tyagi was told by the businessman that a policeman had opened fire at him, the official said.
“The head constable then sought the help of Sunny, who was in a motorcycle, and chased the attacker who was fleeing. But the attacker then opened fire at Tyagi and Sunny. A bullet hit Sunny on his neck,” the official said.
However, as he found it difficult to escape from the scene, one person, later identified as Tomar, who was inducted into the Delhi police in 1995 and presently posted in 7th Battalion, jumped from a bridge.
“He was apprehended and taken to hospital as he was injured,” the official said. Two illegal pistols and gold chains were recovered from his possession while 17 live cartridges were seized from his home.
The police is investigating whether it was a case of extortion or robbery. “We are yet to record the statement of Tomar,” the official said.
