‘Don’t treat eve-teasing as mild offence’
Apart from the rising incidents of rape, women from the national capital often become victims of eve-teasing. Former top cops have suggested better policing and change in laws to prevent such incidents.
Two former Delhi police commissioners, Ved Marwah and T.R. Kakkar, in an interview with this newspaper, said that apart from reviewing the Sections of IPC and CrPC for eve-teasing cases, the police must restore the fear of law among the criminals. Mr Marwah said that the amendment of laws will not help till the time it is implemented properly and timely.
“There are two kinds of rape cases taking place in the national capital. First, in which someone known to the victim indulges in it and the second case in which completely unknown goons commit the crime. Now, in the first case, the police cannot help to prevent the crime but it can help in speedy trial. But for the second case, the police must send a strong message to the criminals that they cannot escape after committing such a heinous crime. In any case of eve-teasing, the police must act swiftly not only for the arrest but for the prosecution also,” he said. He termed the police force as an “armed militia” of the ruling party. He added that the situation can only improve when the politicisation of the police force will be stopped. “Political interference in transfers and postings must be eradicated,” he added.
However, Mr Kakkar said that there is a strong need of reviewing the laws of eve-teasing as it is considered as a mild offence.
“Eve-teasing must not be treated as a mild offence,” Mr Kakkar said.
