DMRC seeks control around Metro stations

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation chief E. Sreedharan met Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit seeking control of the land within 50 metre radius of Metro stations on the grounds that vendors selling knick-knacks and other small items are leading to problems within the Metro stations.
“The polythene bags being carried by passengers often find way into the station, resulting in jamming escalators. Littering also makes the platforms dirty. Mr Sreedharan argued that with the control of the land over 50 metres around the Metro stations, the DMRC would be in a better position to regulate such things,” a senior government official said.
“Mr Sreedharan has demanded proper sanitation and maintenance of the area outside Metro stations. If the proposal gets approved then the vendors will have to seek permission from Delhi Metro. They might lay down new rules for the vendors,” the government official added.

Dec. 8: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday carried out sealing of the fourth and fifth floors of the buildings violating the 15 metres height norm in the areas around Lalita Park in east Delhi, where 71 people had died in a building collapse on November 15.
The exercise was carried out amid much protest and agitation by the residents of the buildings, who were sent notices earlier. The local councillor, Sohan Lal, was also allegedly man-handled.
According to the MCD officials, portions of at least 19 buildings, which violated the permissible limit of 15 metres, were sealed. They added that entire premises have not been sealed but only the fourth and fifth floors, which are not allowed.
While Mr Lal was manhandled by an angry group of builders, a case of causing hurt has been lodged at the local police station.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
