‘Disaster response was not quick’
Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly, V.K. Malhotra, on Wednesday said incidents of terrorist attack, house collapse, inundation of the city due to heavy rains have proved that there is clear lack of quick response team for disaster management, which is causing utmost inconvenient to the people.
Mr Malhotra said that the last year’s building collapse at Lalita Park, incident of terrorist attack at Delhi high court, and building collapse at Chandni Mahal have exposed flaws in the disaster management in Delhi. “In all these incidents, the local people quickly responded to provide relief to the victims whereas the government machinery reached the spot very late. Even hospitals could not provide sufficient treatment,” alleged Mr Malhotra. The senior BJP leader further charged that the Delhi Disaster Management team is not well equipped to meet eventuality like earthquake, heavy rains, and terrorist attack. Mr Malhotra said “it is disastrous to follow the policy of digging well when the fire has already engulfed your office”.
Mr Malhotra asked the lieutenant governor and the chief minister to constitute a Disaster Management Committee by taking all departments into confidence. and make proper arrangements to meet any kinds of eventuality.
