Delhi Assembly set for stormy Winter Session

The six-day-long Winter Session of the Delhi Assembly is set to commence from Tuesday, with the alleged financial irregularities in the just concluded Commonwealth Games likely to give the House a stormy start. The Opposition is also gearing up to corner the ruling Congress-led city government on the issue of the collapse of a House in east Delhi as well.

A short duration discussion has been listed on the very first day of the House on the issue of the Commonwealth Games, which will be initiated by Leader of the Opposition V.K. Malhotra and senior BJP leader Harsh Vardhan. The city unit of the BJP has also stated that it would take out a march from Red Fort to the Assembly on Thursday demanding resignation of the chief minister Sheila Dikshit for irregularities in the organisation of the Games.
The Opposition is also gearing up to corner the government on the issue of the recent building collapse in east Delhi, while the problem of unauthorised colonies will also be raised in the House. The House is also to mourn loss of lives in the building collapse on Tuesday.
Assembly Speaker Yoganand Shastri, while addressing the media on Monday, conceded that the Winter Session could be a stormy one given the kind of issues which are to be raised.
He told reporters that a total of 545 notices of questions, including 120 starred questions, have been received by his secretariat for discussion. The Court Fee (Delhi Amendment) Bill 2010 is the only legislative bill listed in the business agenda of the House.
Dr Shastri also informed that the House would also discuss traffic problem in the city. Also on the list of items for discussion are situation arising out of discontinuation of development works in unauthorised colonies, alleged corruption in the allotment of stalls and relocation of vendor carts by the MCD.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
