Customs official, mom run over
A 56-year-old senior customs official and his elderly mother were run over by an unknown vehicle on Inner Ring Road near Ashram flyover early on Wednesday.
The police officials said the deceased, identified as B.S. Thapa, who worked as an additional assistant director with central excise and customs department was going to
his Indirapuram residence in neighbouring Ghaziabad on a Bajaj Chetak scooter. He was accompanied by his mother Asha Thapa, 78, when an unidentified vehicle hit them near Ashram flyover of south east Delhi. The vehicle has apparently ran over the two, the police said.
A passerby spotted the bodies and alerted the police. The mother-son duo were taken to AIIMS trauma centre where doctors declared them brought dead. The police officials said the driver of the erring vehicle managed to make way out of the area without being noticed as no eyewitness has reported the accident to the police so far.
The officials said the due were coming from Thapa’s brother’s residence in Indian Airlines Colony in Vasant Kunj area where they had gone on Wednesday night. “After crossing Ashram flyover, their scooter (DL9SF 1748) was hit by an unidentified vehicle at around 5:30 am close to Siddharth Enclave in Sunlight Colony area, which lies barely 200 meters away from the flyover. The vehicle ran over them, killing both Mr Thapa and his mother on the spot,” a senior police official said.
The impact of the hit was so hard that the scooter skidded up to a few metres on the road.
The bodies were spotted by a commuter who made a PCR call at 6.55 am on Wednesday. The police has recorded the statement of the deceased’s relatives and a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered against the accused driver who has not been identified so far. “We are trying to identify the driver but no arrests have been made so far,” the official said.
